US Intelligence: China Weighing Transfer of Advanced X-Band Radar to Iran, Capable of Tracking F-35 and B-2 Stealth Aircraft

📅 2026-04-16

U.S. intelligence has detected signs that China is weighing the transfer of advanced X-band radar systems to Iran, CBS News reported on April 16, 2026, citing U.S. officials. The disclosure represents the latest in a documented and escalating pattern of Chinese military technology transfers to Tehran throughout the 2026 Iran war, and carries direct implications for U.S. and Israeli stealth aircraft operations in the Middle East.

X-band radar systems operate in the 8-12 GHz frequency range and are specifically optimized for high-resolution tracking of aircraft, including low-observable stealth platforms. The United States deploys X-band radar in its own missile defense architecture — including the AN/TPY-2 radar used in THAAD batteries — precisely because of its ability to detect, track, and discriminate targets at long range with high precision. A Chinese X-band radar transfer to Iran would significantly enhance Tehran's ability to detect and track F-35 Lightning II and F-22 Raptor stealth aircraft operating in the region, as well as B-2 Spirit stealth bombers conducting long-range strike missions — the very platforms the U.S. has relied upon for its most sensitive strike packages throughout Operation Epic Fury.

The X-band radar disclosure is the third confirmed or suspected Chinese military technology transfer to Iran identified by U.S. intelligence in the past month. Earlier in April, CNN reported that China was preparing to ship man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) to Iran through a third-party intermediary. On April 15, the Financial Times reported — citing leaked Iranian military documents — that Iran had acquired the Chinese-built TEE-01B high-resolution Earth observation satellite, operated by the IRGC Aerospace Force, which was used to conduct precision targeting of U.S. military bases across the Middle East including Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, and facilities near the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. Separately, U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency officials assessed in early April that Iran's IRGC was actively exploiting AI-enhanced satellite imagery from Chinese geospatial firm MizarVision to identify and target specific U.S. assets including Patriot batteries, THAAD systems, aircraft shelters, and fuel depots.

Taken together, the pattern constitutes what analysts at Small Wars Journal described as a comprehensive Chinese intelligence and military technology support architecture enabling Iran's operational effectiveness — spanning satellite-based ISR, AI-enhanced targeting, navigation via China's BeiDou GPS alternative, radar systems capable of detecting stealth aircraft, and cybersecurity infrastructure designed to protect Iranian military networks from CIA and Mossad penetration.

The potential X-band radar transfer directly threatens U.S. air operations in the region. The U.S. Air Force has relied heavily on F-35B jets embarked on the USS Tripoli and USS Boxer amphibious assault ships, as well as F-35C and F/A-18 variants from carrier strike groups, throughout Operation Epic Fury. If Iran acquires X-band radar capability with the range and resolution to track these platforms, the tactical advantage conferred by stealth is substantially degraded. Trump had already threatened Beijing over the MANPADS report, warning China would face "big problems." Treasury Secretary Bessent separately warned Chinese banks of secondary sanctions for handling Iranian funds. The X-band radar disclosure adds further pressure to an already severely strained U.S.-China relationship at a moment when Trump is scheduled to visit China next month.
