// Strategic Significance

The Yazoo Mississippi Delta levee system protects the Mississippi Delta -- one of the most agriculturally productive regions in the US -- from both Mississippi River flooding from the west and interior drainage flooding from the Yazoo River system from the east. The infamous Yazoo Pumps project was designed to pump interior floodwater over the levee into the Mississippi but was blocked by EPA as the largest veto of a water project in US history.

// Civilian Impact Assessment

The Mississippi Delta with 500,000 residents and millions of acres of cotton soybean and rice production depends on the levee system. Interior drainage flooding can last months trapping communities when the Mississippi is high.
