// Strategic Significance

The Moffat Tunnel in Colorado is a 6.2-mile railroad tunnel through the Continental Divide at 9,239 feet elevation and is the highest mainline railroad tunnel in the US. The tunnel is the only rail route through the northern Colorado Rockies and its closure would force transcontinental rerouting adding hundreds of miles and significant delays. The extreme altitude and Rocky Mountain weather create serious operational challenges and emergency response is extremely difficult.
