// Strategic Significance

The William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge also known as the Bay Bridge spans the Chesapeake Bay connecting Maryland Eastern Shore to Annapolis and the Baltimore-Washington metro. The bridge is closed during high wind events and has been closed during multiple noreasters stranding Eastern Shore residents. The twin span bridge is the only fixed link for much of Maryland Eastern Shore. A major closure isolates over 300,000 Eastern Shore residents from the rest of Maryland.

// Civilian Impact Assessment

Queen Annes County with 50,000 residents and Maryland Eastern Shore with 300,000 residents. The Bay Bridge is the only fixed link for the Eastern Shore. High winds regularly close the bridge. Noreasters can close the bridge for extended periods isolating the Eastern Shore. A major structural failure would require ferry service as the only alternative.
