// Strategic Significance
The Bunker Hill Mining and Metallurgical Complex in the Silver Valley of Idaho is the second largest Superfund site in the US covering 1,500 square miles. Lead zinc and silver mining operations deposited lead throughout the Coeur dAlene River basin. Blood lead levels in Kellogg area children were among the highest ever recorded in the US in the 1970s. The site is also called the Silver Valley Superfund.
// Civilian Impact Assessment
Shoshone County and the broader Silver Valley communities face ongoing lead exposure from contaminated soil and the Coeur dAlene River and Lake. Kellogg area children historically had blood lead levels causing neurological damage.
// Evacuation & Shelter Guidance
Shoshone County residents should follow EPA guidance on soil contact restrictions and Coeur dAlene Lake use advisories. Children should be tested for blood lead levels.
