Shelby County south of Birmingham was severely impacted by the April 27 2011 tornado super outbreak — the deadliest tornado outbreak in US history which killed 324 people across Alabama. Multiple long-track violent tornadoes struck the county. The county has been one of the fastest growing in Alabama as Birmingham's southern suburbs expand. The Cahaba River creates flooding risk and Cahaba is one of the most biodiverse rivers in North America.
