Plaquemines Parish is the southernmost parish in Louisiana extending like a finger into the Gulf of Mexico along the Mississippi River delta. The parish faces the most extreme hurricane vulnerability of any parish in Louisiana — it is sinking at one of the fastest rates in the world due to land subsidence and is surrounded by water on three sides. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the parish and Ida in 2021 caused catastrophic damage again. The parish hosts critical oil and gas facilities at the mouth of the Mississippi.
