Bastrop County east of Austin was devastated by the September 2011 Bastrop Complex Fire — the most destructive wildfire in Texas history which destroyed 1691 homes and burned 34000 acres of the Lost Pines forest. The Colorado River creates flooding risk. The county has seen explosive growth as Austin's eastern suburbs expand rapidly placing new residents in high wildfire risk terrain. SpaceX's Boca Chica facility is in the state and the county hosts some space industry related growth.
