Tuscaloosa was devastated by an EF4 tornado on April 27 2011 that cut a mile-wide path through the University of Alabama campus and surrounding neighborhoods killing 64 people and destroying thousands of structures. The tornado was part of the catastrophic Super Outbreak that killed over 250 people across Alabama in a single day. The Black Warrior River creates flooding risk. Tuscaloosa has rebuilt extensively but remains in one of Alabama's most active tornado corridors.
