Paradise was virtually destroyed by the Camp Fire on November 8 2018 — the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. The fire killed 85 people and destroyed 18804 structures including 95% of Paradise in under 8 hours. The town of 27000 people was essentially erased from the map. The Camp Fire demonstrated that entire communities can be annihilated by wildfire with little warning and that evacuation routes can become death traps when multiple communities flee simultaneously.
