Newport is Oregon's central coast hub and one of the most tsunami-vulnerable cities on the West Coast. NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and the Oregon Coast Aquarium are located here, but large portions of the city — including the Bayfront tourist district — sit within the Cascadia tsunami inundation zone. A full Cascadia rupture would produce catastrophic tsunamis with arrival times of 20-30 minutes, insufficient for full evacuation of low-lying areas.
