Mercury is the support community for the Nevada National Security Site — formerly the Nevada Test Site, where the United States detonated 928 nuclear weapons between 1951 and 1992, including over 100 above-ground tests that contaminated vast areas of Nevada and downwind states. The site now serves as a nuclear security research facility and continues handling nuclear materials. Radioactive contamination from decades of testing remains across the landscape, and underground nuclear test cavities continue to collapse and subside. The downwinder communities across Nevada, Utah, and Arizona who were exposed to fallout from above-ground tests represent one of the largest radiation exposure events in US history.
