Longview Washington sits at the confluence of the Cowlitz and Columbia rivers in one of the most industrially significant river corridors on the West Coast. The city hosts major aluminum, paper, and chemical manufacturing operations. Mount St Helens sits approximately 50 miles northeast — the Cowlitz River is the primary lahar flow path from a future eruption, and Longview sits in the path of potential lahar flows. The 1980 Mount St Helens eruption sent a massive debris flow down the Cowlitz that threatened the city. Columbia River flooding is a secondary risk.
