Joplin was struck by the deadliest single tornado in modern US history on May 22 2011 when an EF5 tornado over a mile wide killed 161 people and destroyed over 7000 structures including St. John's Regional Medical Center. The tornado was on the ground for 22 miles and caused $2.8 billion in damage. Joplin has rebuilt extensively but the event permanently changed how the city approaches tornado preparedness and warning response.
