Gulfport on Mississippi's Gulf Coast was catastrophically devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which produced a 28-foot storm surge — the highest ever recorded in the United States at the time. The surge traveled up to 6 miles inland destroying virtually everything in its path. Gulfport's entire waterfront was obliterated. The city rebuilt extensively over the following decade but remains directly exposed to Gulf of Mexico hurricanes with limited elevation protection.
