Fort Wainwright Alaska is the largest active duty Army installation in Alaska and a critical component of US Arctic military operations. The installation houses the 11th Airborne Division and is the primary Army response force for Alaska and the Arctic. The extreme subarctic conditions — temperatures regularly reaching -50°F — create unique military readiness and emergency response challenges. The base is a primary staging point for any US military response to Russian activity in the Arctic or threats to Alaska.
