Crescent City California is one of the most tsunami-prone cities in the United States — the city was devastated by the 1964 Alaska earthquake tsunami that killed 11 people and destroyed 29 city blocks. The harbor was specifically shaped to focus tsunami energy into the city. Del Norte County sits at the northern end of California directly on the Cascadia Subduction Zone fault zone. A major Cascadia earthquake could generate tsunamis far more destructive than 1964. The community is extremely isolated and self-sufficiency in emergency preparedness is critical.
