Chicopee is home to Westover Air Reserve Base — one of the largest military air reserve facilities in the Northeast — and sits on the Connecticut River with tornado exposure and river flooding risk. The 2011 tornado that struck Springfield also affected Chicopee. Westover's airlift mission and the C-5 Galaxy transport aircraft based there give it critical regional emergency airlift capacity.
