Cape Coral was catastrophically devastated by Hurricane Ian in September 2022 when the Category 4 storm made landfall just south of the city with a storm surge of up to 18 feet. Ian was the deadliest Florida hurricane since 1935 killing over 150 people across Lee County. Cape Coral with its 400 miles of canals — more than any other city in the world — experienced widespread inundation as storm surge pushed water throughout the entire canal system destroying thousands of homes.
