Glades County on the south shore of Lake Okeechobee faces catastrophic dam failure risk from the Herbert Hoover Dike — rated one of the most dangerous dams in the United States. A dike breach during a major hurricane could inundate the county under feet of water within hours. The county is one of Florida's least populated but most at-risk communities. Moore Haven the county seat sits directly below the lake level protected only by aging earthen dike infrastructure.
