Calais Maine sits on the St Croix River at the US-Canada border across from St Stephen, New Brunswick — the easternmost US border crossing on the Atlantic coast. Washington County is the easternmost county in the US and experiences some of the most severe winters on the East Coast with significant nor'easter impacts. The Bay of Fundy tidal effects reach the St Croix River estuary. The remote Washington County coast has very limited emergency response infrastructure.
