Nine US Scientists and Defense Researchers Tied to Secret Programs Found Dead or Missing — Pattern Draws FBI, Congressional Scrutiny

📅 2026-04-10

[ UPDATE — April 10, 2026 ] A ninth case has been identified and added to this record. See full updated roster below.

ORIGINAL REPORT (March 31, 2026): Eight scientists and defense researchers with access to classified US programs had died or disappeared since July 2024, sparking national security concerns. Cases included NASA scientist Frank Maiwald found dead July 4, 2024 in Los Angeles with no autopsy performed, pharmaceutical researcher Jason Thomas discovered dead March 17, 2026 in Wakefield, Massachusetts after vanishing three months earlier, missing retired Air Force Major General William Neil McCasland who disappeared February 27 from his Albuquerque home without phone or glasses, Los Alamos National Laboratory employee Melissa Casias missing since June 26, 2025, MIT physicist Nuno Loureiro killed December 15, 2025 in Brookline, Massachusetts, and Caltech astrophysicist Carl Grillmair fatally shot February 17, 2026 at his Llano home. Tennessee Congressman Tim Burchett called the pattern suspicious, noting victims' ties to nuclear research, UFO programs, and advanced aerospace technology.

APRIL 10, 2026 UPDATE — NINTH CASE CONFIRMED:

On April 8-9, 2026, the Daily Mail and New York Post reported that a ninth individual has been identified as part of the pattern: Michael David Hicks, a veteran research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. Hicks died on July 30, 2023 at the age of 59. He worked at JPL from 1998 to 2022, contributing to the DART asteroid deflection project, the Near Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) program, the Dawn Mission, and NASA Deep Space 1 — programs with direct dual-use military applications in planetary defense and hypersonic tracking technology. No cause of death has ever been publicly disclosed, no autopsy record can be found, and neither NASA nor JPL has issued any comment. His death went largely unnoticed until investigative reporting identified it as part of the broader pattern in April 2026.

Full roster of nine cases as of April 10, 2026:

1. Michael David Hicks — NASA JPL research scientist, died July 30, 2023, age 59. No cause of death disclosed. No autopsy. DART Project, Deep Space 1, Near Earth Asteroid Tracking.

2. Frank Maiwald — NASA JPL scientist, died July 2024, no public cause of death, no autopsy performed. Longtime colleague of Hicks at JPL.

3. Monica Jacinto Reza — 60-year-old aerospace engineer and former Technical Fellow at Aerojet Rocketdyne with NASA ties, co-inventor of "Mondaloy," a high-performance nickel superalloy for next-generation rocket engines. Vanished June 22, 2025 while hiking near Mount Waterman in California's Angeles National Forest. Two friends were 30 feet away when she disappeared. Never found.

4. Anthony Chavez — former Los Alamos National Laboratory worker, disappeared May 4, 2025. No explanation, no resolution.

5. Melissa Casias — administrative employee at Los Alamos National Laboratory with top security clearance. Disappeared June 26, 2025. Both her work and personal phones found at home wiped after factory reset.

6. Nuno Loureiro — leading MIT plasma physicist and director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center. Shot dead in his Brookline, Massachusetts home in December 2025 by former classmate Claudio Neves Valente, a Portuguese national. Motive remains unclear.

7. William Neil McCasland — retired Air Force Major General, 68, commanded the Air Force Research Laboratory, oversaw billions in classified aerospace programs. Appeared in 2016 WikiLeaks Podesta emails in connection with UFO/UAP knowledge. Disappeared from his Albuquerque, New Mexico home February 27, 2026, leaving behind his phone, glasses, prescription medications, and wearable devices. FBI search ongoing.

8. Carl Grillmair — 67-year-old Caltech astrophysicist, JPL-supported research, infrared technology applicable to satellite and hypersonic missile tracking. Fatally shot on the front porch of his Llano, California home at 6 AM on February 16, 2026. Shooter and victim were not known to each other. Motive not publicly disclosed.

9. Jason Thomas — pharmaceutical researcher at Novartis, found dead in a Massachusetts lake on March 17, 2026, after disappearing three months earlier. No foul play suspected. Cause of death undetermined.

Former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker stated: "You can say these are all suspicious, and these are scientists who have worked in critical technology. China, Russia, even some of our friends — Pakistan, India, Iran, North Korea — they target this type of technology." Tennessee Congressman Tim Burchett added: "The numbers seem very high in these certain areas of research. This has had a real chilling effect. People don't want to talk about this issue anymore. They are afraid." Neither the FBI nor NASA has confirmed a formal investigation linking the cases.
