Seward was devastated by the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake and tsunami, which destroyed the waterfront and killed multiple residents. The city sits in Resurrection Bay at the head of a fjord with extreme tsunami, earthquake, and landslide risk. Steep mountains surrounding the bay create avalanche and rockfall hazard alongside the seismic and tsunami threats. Its role as an Alaska Railroad terminus makes it a critical freight entry point for interior Alaska.
