Silver City is a mountain mining community in the Gila Wilderness region of southwestern New Mexico, with high wildfire risk from surrounding Gila National Forest terrain. The 2012 Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire was the largest in New Mexico history at that time and burned within miles of the city. Flash flooding following wildfire is a compounding hazard in the post-burn landscape, as bare slopes channel debris flows into drainages.
