Valdez at the terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline is one of the most hazardous communities in Alaska. The 1964 Good Friday earthquake and tsunami destroyed the original Valdez killing 33 people. The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill 25 miles away caused catastrophic Prince William Sound environmental damage. Avalanche risk from surrounding mountains is extreme.
