Lahaina on Maui was almost completely destroyed by catastrophic wildfire on August 8 2023 when dry Kona winds drove a grass fire through the historic town killing at least 100 people. The Lahaina fire was the deadliest US wildfire disaster since the 1918 Cloquet Fire in Minnesota. The community faces rebuilding challenges in a wildfire-prone environment.
