Kodiak Island was devastated by the 1964 Good Friday tsunami which inundated the city. Multiple active volcanoes in the Kodiak Island chain create serious ashfall risk. The remote island location makes emergency response extremely challenging. Kodiak is home to the largest US Coast Guard base.
