Grand Forks on the Red River of the North experienced one of the most catastrophic inland flood disasters in American history in April 1997 when the Red River crested at 54 feet — 26 feet above flood stage — inundating 75% of the city and forcing evacuation of virtually the entire population. A fire broke out simultaneously in the flooded downtown destroying 11 buildings. The city has rebuilt with extensive flood protection but remains at risk from major spring flood events.
