Freeport LNG Export Terminal in Brazoria County Texas is the second largest LNG export facility in the US. In June 2022 a fire and explosion at Freeport LNG caused the facility to shut down for months significantly reducing US LNG export capacity and impacting European energy markets during the critical winter heating season following Russias invasion of Ukraine. The 2022 incident was ruled accidental but demonstrated catastrophic vulnerability of LNG facilities. Iran and its proxies have been assessed as having interest in targeting US LNG export capacity to benefit Russian and Iranian energy market positions.

Iran benefits strategically from reduced US LNG exports to Europe. Harvey 2017 demonstrated Gulf Coast hurricane vulnerability. A deliberate attack would have far greater impact than the 2022 accidental explosion.
