Fort Myers was devastated alongside Cape Coral by Hurricane Ian in September 2022. The historic downtown River District experienced catastrophic storm surge flooding as the Caloosahatchee River backed up from Ian's surge. Fort Myers Beach just south was virtually wiped off the map by Ian's direct strike with surge heights estimated at 15-18 feet destroying the iconic Times Square entertainment district and thousands of homes along Estero Island.
