Buncombe County and Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains were catastrophically devastated by Hurricane Helene in September 2024. The storm produced unprecedented rainfall that caused flash flooding and landslides across Western North Carolina killing dozens and destroying communities along the Swannanoa and French Broad Rivers. Many communities were completely cut off for days as roads and bridges were destroyed.
